Step 1 of 9

Create Your Character Application

What is a Character Application?

Before you can play on Site-89, you need to create a character application. This is your chance to tell the community who your character is. Think of it like writing a resume for a job at the Foundation, but for a fictional character.

Your application helps the leadership team understand what kind of character you want to play and makes sure everyone's on the same page about who you'll be portraying.

What Information You'll Need

When you fill out the application, you'll need to provide:

  • Character Name: The name of the person you want to play
  • Department Interest: Which Foundation department interests you (like Research, Security, Medical, etc.)
  • Character Background: A brief description of your character's background and why they would work for the Foundation
  • Discord Username: So leadership can contact you

Important Tips

Be honest and creative in your application. Leadership wants to see genuine interest, not just copy-pasted information. Don't worry if you're not a professional writer, just write clearly and show that you care about the role.

Pro Tip: If you're not sure what the Foundation is or what departments exist, it's totally fine to come back to this step after looking at the website a bit more. You can apply once you have a better idea of what interests you.

What Happens Next?

Once you submit your application, leadership will review it. Then you'll move on to the next steps while you wait for approval. The whole process usually takes 3 hours or less, but during busy times (like holidays), it might take up to 48 hours.

Step 2 of 9

Join Our Discord Server

Why Discord?

Discord is where the community hangs out. It's a chat platform where you can:

  • Talk to other players and staff
  • Get updates about your application status
  • Ask questions if you're confused
  • Coordinate with people and make friends

Joining the server

If you are not already in the discord server, Click on the link below to get the invitation!

Step-by-Step: How to Join Discord

  1. Go to discord.com in your browser
  2. Click "Sign Up" if you don't have an account (or "Log In" if you do)
  3. Create your account with a username and password (this is different from your Site-89 account)
  4. Click the invitation link to join our server
  5. Read the rules and introduction channels to understand how things work
Important: You can use any Discord username you want, it doesn't have to match your Site-89 username or character name. Just make sure it's something you're okay with people seeing.

What to Do Once You're In

Once you've joined the Discord:

  1. Introduce yourself in the introductions channel
  2. Don't be shy! Ask questions if you're confused

Discord Etiquette

Be respectful and follow the server rules. The community is friendly, but everyone deserves to be treated nicely. If you're not sure about something, ask a Roleplay Manager or member of the Board of Directors for help!

Step 3 of 9

Download Techniclauncher & Modpack

What Are These?

Techniclauncher is a special launcher for Minecraft that lets you easily install and manage modpacks. A modpack is a collection of mods (modifications) that change and enhance Minecraft to work for Site-89's roleplay experience.

Think of it like installing a special mod bundle so Minecraft looks and works the way Site-89 needs it to.

Before You Start

⚠️ Important: Make sure you have Java installed on your computer. If you don't have Java, Minecraft won't run. You can download it for free from java.com.

Step 1: Download Techniclauncher

  1. Go to the Techniclauncher website (check the Discord or website for the link)
  2. Click the download button for your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
  3. Save the file to a folder you'll remember (like your Desktop or Downloads folder)
  4. Wait for it to finish downloading (this might take a few minutes depending on your internet)

Step 2: Install Techniclauncher

  1. Find the downloaded file (usually in your Downloads folder)
  2. Double-click it to start the installation
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions (just click "Next" and "Agree" to the terms)
  4. Wait for installation to complete
  5. Once done, you should see a shortcut on your desktop or in your applications

Step 3: Install the Modpack

  1. Open Techniclauncher
  2. Open the "Modpacks" tab
  3. Search for "Site-89"
  4. Click to install the modpack
  5. This will take some time as it downloads all the mods, be patient!
  6. Once the installation is complete, you're good to go

Testing It Out

Once the modpack is installed, you can click "Play" to make sure it launches. You don't need to join the server yet, just make sure it opens without errors. If it crashes, ask for help in Discord!

Step 4 of 9

Wait for Application Approval

What's Happening Right Now?

Your character application is being reviewed by the leadership team. They're reading through your submission and making sure everything looks good. This is totally normal and nothing to worry about.

How Long Will This Take?

Typical timeline: 3 hours or less

Maximum timeline: 48 hours (usually only during busy times like holidays)

Most of the time, you'll get approved pretty quickly. The team moves fast!

What Can You Do While Waiting?

Don't just stare at your screen waiting! You can:

  • Explore the Discord: Chat with other players, ask questions, make friends
  • Read about the Foundation: Visit the #lore or #wiki channel to learn about the SCP universe
  • Check out the website: Look at the departments page to see what areas interest you
  • Finish downloading the modpack: If you haven't already
  • Do literally anything else: Go outside, watch Netflix, play other games. Life goes on!

How You'll Know You're Approved

Leadership will notify you in Discord. Look for:

  • A direct message from a staff member
  • A role or badge next to your name in Discord
Tip: Make sure Discord notifications are turned on for the server so you don't miss your approval notification!

What If I Haven't Heard Back?

If it's been more than 48 hours and you haven't heard anything:

  1. DM a staff member in Discord politely asking about your application status
  2. Don't spam or ask repeatedly, one message is enough
  3. Be patient. They're volunteers running this for fun!

What If My Application Is Denied?

The team hold all applications to a specific standard, if something in your application was lacking in one area, you'll recieve a notice of denial, along with what was wrong and how to improve it. This is not a bad thing, it just means that all applications are held to the same standard, and the team wants yours to meet that standard so it can be approved!

Step 5 of 9

Join the Server & Create Your Character

You're Approved! Now What?

Congratulations! Your application has been approved. Now it's time to actually join the Minecraft server and create your character.

How to Join the Minecraft Server

  1. Open Techniclauncher (the launcher you installed in Step 3)
  2. Select the Site-89 modpack
  3. Click "Play" to launch Minecraft with the modpack
  4. Wait for Minecraft to load (this might take a minute or two)
  5. In the main menu, click "Site-89"
  6. You should now be connected to the Site-89 server!

Creating Your Character In-Game

Once you join the server, you'll see instructions to create your character. This involves:

  1. Pressing a button which will create a blank character
  2. Using the character card to customize your character as you see fit

If you're confused, don't hesitate to ask in chat or use /callstaff. Everyone is there to help!

What Happens Once You've Created Your Character?

You'll spawn into the world as your new character. You will:

  • Be in the town outside of the site, as you are not yet Foundation personnel
  • Walk around and explore the town
  • When you're ready, make the walk to Gate-A
  • Meet the gatekeeper and tell them you're there for onboarding

Important Reminders

Rules apply here! Just because you're in the game doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. Follow server rules, be respectful to other players, and behave as your character would when you're in RP.

Your First Few Minutes

Don't panic if you're confused! Take your time to look around, read signs, and observe what other players are doing. You'll get the hang of it quickly.

Step 6 of 9

Get Help From an IA Agent

What is Internal Affairs?

Internal Affairs is a Foundation department that handles administrative tasks like creating new personnel records, issuing ID badges, and onboarding new staff. An IA Agent is someone from this department who will help you get officially registered in the Foundation system.

Fun Fact: Internal Affairs is the only division that is capable of pausing Roleplay at any time. They're kind of like the "Game Masters" of the Site! Because of this, they are also the only division that exists both in and out of character.

Why Do You Need an IA Agent?

To become a "real" Foundation member, you need official documentation:

  • ID Card (PID): Your official ID, which includes your Personnel ID number
  • Keycard: Your access badge to different areas of the Foundation

An IO Agent will take you to an Identification Center where they will issue you your keycard and ID.

How to Find an IO Agent

There are two ways to get their attention:

Option 1: Request in Discord

  1. In #on-topic, type something like: "Anyone from IO available to help me with onboarding?"
  2. Wait for an IO Agent to respond
  3. They'll usually be very responsive and helpful

Option 2: Catch one in Roleplay

  1. At least one IO agent is required to be present at every roleplay event
  2. Because of this they are often easy to find if you look around
  3. When they see a new person, they'll usually approach you
  4. They might ask you if you've got your valid identification yet
Tip: Most of the time, if you ask in Discord, an IO Agent will be available within 10-30 minutes.

What to Expect During the Issuing Process

The IO Agent will guide you through an in-character interview/process. They'll:

  • Ask you questions about your character
  • Assign you a Personnel ID Number
  • Give you a keycard with access level 1
  • Register that PID number in the system
  • Send you on your way as an official Foundation employee

Be Patient and Respectful

IO Agents are volunteers doing this for fun. Be polite, follow their instructions, and remember that this is roleplay. If you're confused, ask out-of-character questions!

Step 7 of 9

Receive Your ID & Keycard

What Just Happened?

Congratulations! An IO Agent has officially registered you as a Foundation employee. You now have:

  • Personnel ID (PID): Your unique employee number (something like 12345, 00789, etc.)
  • Keycard: Your access badge to Foundation areas
  • Clearance Level: Your security clearance (you start as an Intern with Level 1)

Where Is My ID & Keycard?

Ingame, you should have received:

  • A keycard in your inventory (a physical item you can see in-game)
  • An ID Card with all of your identifying information on it!
Tip: IDs and keycards expire exactly 6 months after issuance. Make sure to renew them at an identity center before they expire to avoid any access issues!

What Does Your Keycard Do?

Your keycard gives you access to certain areas of the Foundation:

  • Level 1 (Intern): Access to common areas, break rooms, and basic Foundation facilities
  • Higher clearance levels unlock more restricted areas (but you start at Level 1)

You'll learn more about what areas you can access as you explore.

What Now?

You have your credentials! But there's one more step before you're fully set up, registering your character on this website. That way, your profile is complete and people can see who you are.

Keep Your Cards Safe!

In roleplay, your ID and keycard are important. Don't lose them! If you somehow do, you can ask an IO Agent to issue you new ones.

Step 8 of 9

Register Your Character & Add Bio

Why Register Here?

This website maintains a personnel database for the Site. By registering your character here, you're officially adding yourself to our records. This lets other players find you, see your character info, and know who you are in the roleplay.

What You'll Need

Before you start, gather:

  • Your ID card: Your PID number is on it
  • Character Bio: A description of who your character is and their backstory
  • Character Picture: When you got your ID and keycard, your agent should have taken a photo of you, once you make your character they will use that photo for your profile

Step-by-Step: How to Register

  1. Go to the Manage Characters page
  2. Click "Add Character" or "Create New Character"
  3. Enter your Personnel ID in the field provided
  4. The system will look up your Foundation record (this should load automatically)
  5. Confirm your identity and character details
  6. You're now registered!

Writing Your Character Bio

Your bio should answer questions like:

  • Who is your character? (name, age, background)
  • What's their personality like?
  • Why do they work for the Foundation?
  • What are their skills or specialties?
  • What do they look like?

For a more comprehensive guide on writing your bio and other character related info, check out the Character Guide

What Happens Next?

Once you're registered, you're all set! Other players can visit the personnel files and see your character. You're officially part of the Foundation.

Pro Tip: You can edit your character bio and picture anytime. As you develop your character in roleplay, come back and update your profile!
Step 9 of 9

Welcome to the Foundation!

You Did It!

You're officially a Foundation member with Level 1 clearance. You have:

  • ✓ A character with a name and background
  • ✓ A Personnel ID and keycard
  • ✓ Access to the server
  • ✓ A profile on this website
  • ✓ Connections with other players in Discord

You're an Intern. Now What?

As an Intern with Level 1 clearance, you're at the beginning of your Foundation journey. Here are your next steps:

1. Explore the Foundation

Wander around the server, check out different areas, and get a feel for the world. You'll see:

  • Research labs
  • Containment areas
  • Administrative offices
  • Break rooms and other staff areas

2. Check Out the Departments

Visit the Departments page to learn about different areas you could specialize in:

  • Scientific: Study anomalies and run experiments
  • Security: Protect the Foundation and handle threats
  • External Operations: Work on field missions and public relations
  • Administrative: Handle paperwork and management
  • And more!

3. Get Involved in Roleplay

That's the whole point! Engage with other players, participate in events, do research, solve mysteries, and develop your character. This is where the real fun happens.

4. Ask Questions

If you don't understand something about the world or the rules:

  • Ask other players in chat or Discord (politely)
  • Check the Guides Page! It provides helpful information and answers to common questions.
  • Contact staff members if it's important
Everyone was new once. No one will judge you for asking questions. The community is here to help each other have fun!

Important Reminders

Remember to read and follow the Rules! We want Site-89 to be a fun and safe place for everyone. Breaking rules can lead to penalties, so always play fair and respect others.

Level Up Your Clearance

As you play and prove yourself, you might earn higher clearance levels. This opens up more areas and opportunities. Keep an eye out for advancement opportunities!

One Last Thing

Thank you for joining us! We're excited to have you as part of the Site-89 community. Now go conquer the world (or at least the Site). You've got this!

Welcome to Site-89. 🎉
